Social proof is the backbone of conversion optimization, but gathering good testimonials is usually a massive headache. "Great product!" doesn't move the needle when I'm running A/B trials, and generic reviews do absolutely nothing to stop landing page drop-offs.

A colleague recently asked me how to get better reviews because everything they collected was too vague to actually use. The problem is simple. When you ask a customer to "leave a review," they freeze up. They have zero idea what you expect from them. If they do write something, it's usually garbage that doesn't help your conversion rate at all.

Here's a wildly better way to handle it. You need to spoon-feed them the structure. People look for what is socially acceptable before they act. If you want picture-perfect testimonials, give them three to five examples of exactly what you're looking for. When they see the format, nearly everyone will model their response after it.

Someone in the thread asked what this actually looks like in practice. Instead of giving them a blank canvas, I use a framework of prompts. I'll send an email asking if they'd share their experience (video is always best for building user trust, but written works too). Then I provide a list of questions to spark their memory:

What made you go looking for this solution?
What was your biggest hesitation before buying?
What else did you try before finding us?
What specific feature do you like best?
What results have you actually seen so far?
What would you say to someone sitting on the fence?

Tell them to just pick a few that resonate and answer from the heart. Explaining why you're asking these specific questions can also nudge them in the right direction. Just make sure you get written consent to use whatever they send over in your marketing material.
