Scaling newsletters and monetizing media brands is literally my day job. building audiences is what pays my bills. So when the idea struck to launch a paranormal podcast from scratch a year ago, the plan seemed foolproof: plug in a mic, talk about cryptids for an hour, cut out the coughs, and hit upload. Easy.

It was a f*cking nightmare.

the amount of invisible workload hit almost immediately. research, scripting, audio cleanup, titles, thumbnails, social distribution, and scheduling make up an entire iceberg under the part people actually hear. Planning an entire approach around just the tip of that iceberg was a massive mistake. this hidden labor is exactly why so many podcasts die after a handful of episodes. people watch top creators, think they can just talk to their friends for an hour, and then reality shows up. editing takes forever. You stumble over every other sentence. You redo takes. You listen back and become personally offended by the sound of your own voice. Suddenly your fun little project has a massive operational budget of your own time. A lot of shows with genuinely good concepts don't fail on content. They fail on workload.

An average one-hour episode looks something like this behind the scenes:
Up to two hours to record.
two hours minimum to edit.
Days of research and scripting.

That is without any wild sound design. Making audio flow naturally eats more time than anyone warns you about. But that grind is where the actual growth happens. you don't get better by preparing forever. you get better by shipping garbage episodes until they are less bad.

Nearly 60 weekly episodes in a row are now out there. zero missed weeks, a few bonus episodes thrown in. late nights, chaotic schedules, going to bed at 3 AM on finishing touches and getting up at 5:30 for work. Publicly announcing a launch date was probably the smartest early move. had that not happened, the show would still be "almost ready" today, with me tweaking a thumbnail into eternity. set a date, tell people, and launch the thing. the first episodes will be so far from perfect they basically resemble a different art form.

Social media distribution matters way more than expected. Spinning up TikTok, Instagram, and for clips became the main growth engine. traffic spikes there immediately translate to downloads ticking up. Starting from absolute zero meant no contacts, no built-in audience, and no following. Just an idea and a severely overestimated amount of free time. a year in, the show averages over a thousand monthly downloads. small compared to the giants, sure. But every month it climbs a little, and slow, steady growth keeps you sane compared to blowing up and immediately stagnating.

Monetizing media is my actual career, yet financially, this project has earned just shy of 200 bucks this year. About half came from TikTok, and the rest from the podcast after hitting monetization around Halloween. Payout thresholds mean a chunk of that has not even cleared yet. People love giving crap about not earning real money right out of the gate, but that completely misses the point of year one.

Expensive gear is a trap. starting on a cheap twenty-dollar Amazon mic got the job done. upgrading to a Blue Yeti Nano later definitely sounded better, but learning basic editing and noise cleanup improved the audio more than hardware ever did. obsessing over a five-hundred-dollar mic is pointless when storytelling and decent pacing matter ten times more.

solo storytelling shows live and die on the host. Conversational formats can coast on banter and chemistry. A solo paranormal or true-crime show cannot hide behind anything. Pacing, delivery, writing, energy, and the ability to keep someone listening are entirely on your shoulders. You are basically running an one-person media company. Sitting alone in a room talking to a microphone is psychologically cursed at first. you feel stupid. hearing the playback makes you convinced you are the dumbest-sounding human alive. Hating your own recorded voice is just the standard package. You never really get over it, you just get used to it.

early on, it feels like screaming into the void. Pouring days into an episode just to get four listens is rough. But the backlog quietly does the heavy lifting. Someone recently found the show through a guest spot on another podcast and messaged that they were starting from the very first episode. they were on episode four. The immediate internal reaction was pure dread, because those early ones are incredibly rough. the only response was promising them that the quality gets better.

Sometimes reality glitches in your favor. Grabbing an energy drink and beef jerky at a discount store before work, a stranger walked up, stared, and went "holy f*ck, it's you!" He had been bingeing the clips the night before. That was one of the strangest moments ever, because internally, the mindset is still just someone making paranormal audio files in a spare room. that single interaction provided more motivation than any analytics dashboard.

Nobody prepares you for the hate. Hundreds of unhinged comments have rolled in over the months. Personal insults, people calling the content stupid, users acting like mentioning Bigfoot personally ruined their day. The silver lining is that the algorithm simply does not care if comments are angry or kind. the platforms just see engagement. An angry mob in the replies is technically free reach. For every loud hater, there are dozens of quiet people who enjoyed the content and kept scrolling.

Predicting what an audience will connect with is impossible. finishing an episode thinking it was garbage often results in massive praise. dropping what feels like a masterpiece usually ends in a flop. Aliens, conspiracies, and cryptids are far more interesting to me personally, but the ghost episodes consistently pull better numbers. analytics don't care about personal taste, and they make that brutally clear.

Burnout will take you out if you lack contingency plans. Batching recordings earlier would have saved so much stress. avoiding it initially seemed smart to prevent locking in "old" versions of the format while improving week to week. Now, batching is the only way to prevent panic editing at 2 AM. when energy levels crashed, having backup content ready, like mini-episodes or clip compilations, bailed out the schedule entirely. the post-holiday download dip in January and February crushed all the metrics. everything sagged. Even knowing it was seasonal, the self-doubt crept in. the only solution was to keep posting. a few months later, the monthly average hit an all-time high.

Overextending is a rookie trap that is very easy to fall into. launching the main feed alongside TikTok, Instagram, , community forums, and a Patreon all at once was insane. admitting there are only so many hours in a day forces you to prioritize what actually drives growth. The main feed and short-form video stayed. The rest got heavily demoted. growing a project around full-time work means learning exactly where your energy yields the highest return.

nobody on Earth cares about your content as much as you do. agonizing over a clunky transition, a weirdly pronounced word, or a joke that missed is a waste of time. Ninety percent of the audience never even notices. Quality matters, but chasing perfection forever guarantees you never publish. an episode that is mostly there and actually live beats a flawless file sitting unfinished on a hard drive. Hosting platforms like Acast let you swap the audio later anyway. Catching a mistake after publishing just means fixing it, re-uploading, and letting the backlog listeners hear the updated version.

Creating content completely ruins how you consume media. doomscrolling is a thing of the past. Now it's just involuntary analysis of pacing, sound cues, editing tricks, and delivery. Hearing a slick transition immediately triggers the urge to steal it. Once the creator switch flips in your brain, passive consumption is dead.

Motivation is entirely useless. Discipline is what actually scales operations. Momentum dictates everything. skip one week and skipping a second becomes dangerously easy. Soon after, the project quietly dies in a ditch. making the workflow part of a non-negotiable routine makes consistency possible, even on days when looking at an editing timeline makes you want to vomit.

Things will go wrong constantly. Forgetting to hit record happens. deleting crucial sections happens. uploading the wrong file happens. Discovering the audio balancing is cursed only after the episode is live happens. getting to the end of a guest recording and realizing the camera in Riverside was never turned on leaves you with two options: cry, or laugh and accept it as an audio-only release. Nobody does this perfectly.

redefining success is the only way to survive the first year. day one usually starts with delusions of going viral, quitting the day job, and topping the charts. Seeing those "I posted six episodes and now get 50k downloads" stories tricks you into measuring progress against a lottery ticket. better questions matter more. is the posting schedule consistent? Are the numbers trending up? is the audience connecting? Building something real out of nothing is the actual metric of success. Year one is just the prologue. The real grind is keeping the momentum alive
