My biggest SEO mistake?
Chasing traffic instead of chasing intent.
Early on, I was obsessed with:
- impressions
- clicks
- keyword volume
- ranking screenshots
And honestly, traffic did grow.
But conversions barely moved.
That’s when I realized:
100,000 visitors means nothing if they’re the wrong visitors.
I was writing content around high-volume keywords that attracted curiosity, not buyers.
Example:
- broad educational topics
- generic “what is” keywords
- low-intent informational searches
Lots of traffic.
Very little revenue.
The real shift happened when I started focusing on:
- buyer intent
- problem-aware searches
- comparison keywords
- decision-stage content
- conversion flow
Traffic dropped initially.
Revenue increased.
That completely changed how I viewed SEO.
Another huge mistake:
publishing random disconnected blogs.
At one point, the website looked like:
- SEO tips
- AI tools
- Instagram growth
- business mindset
- random marketing trends
Google had no idea what authority we were trying to build.
Once we focused on topical clusters and clear niche positioning, rankings became much more stable.
And honestly?
Ignoring internal linking for years was another painful lesson.
People underestimate how much weak site architecture kills growth.
One more controversial lesson:
Backlinks alone are overrated now.
Important? Yes.
But not enough anymore.
We’ve seen pages with:
- better UX
- stronger intent matching
- topical depth
- better structure
- higher engagement
outrank pages with stronger backlink profiles.
SEO in 2026 feels way more holistic than before.
It’s no longer:
“Who can manipulate Google better?”
It’s increasingly:
“Who actually deserves to rank for this topic?”
That mindset shift taught me more than any SEO course ever did.
A lot of what we do at The Content Bot now is built around avoiding those exact mistakes especially focusing on SEO + AEO/GEO, topical authority, conversion-focused structure, and building traffic that actually turns into business instead of vanity metrics.
