I've been deep in SEO for years, heatmaps and conversion funnels are my thing. but I wanted to break out of just organic traffic and get into performance marketing. So I ran a little personal experiment: learn Google Ads first or jump into Meta Ads? Here's what the data showed me.
Coming from SEO, the keyword intent mindset transfers almost perfectly into Google Ads. You already think in terms of search queries and user intent - it's like swapping organic for paid but the same logic applies. I found Google Ads way easier to pick up initially. Plus enterprise demand is higher, and salary data I've seen favours paid search in most markets. Meta Ads, on the other hand, is a different beast - more creative, more visual, better for ecom and B2C freelance work. but the learning curve is steeper if you're starting from SEO.
my hypothesis was that Google Ads first makes sense for career stability. After six months, I added Meta Ads. Knowing both makes you genuinely hard to replace - you become the SEO person who also owns paid search, which is a killer combo for conversion rate optimisation. Freelancing potential? Meta wins if you target small ecom brands, Google wins for agencies and larger clients. Long-term with AI? both platforms are automating more, but understanding the underlying data and tracking is what keeps you valuable.
So if I were doing this transition again, I'd start with Google Ads for the direct skill transfer and higher initial salary boost, then layer on Meta Ads after 6-12 months. The tracking and conversion data from Google will also make Meta easier to tune later. My test results are in - now running a multivariate experiment on whether that order holds for others too.
