Spent the last couple of months trying to figure out PR and media placements for a SaaS launch in the AI space. Not starting from zero - we've got good traction and some pre-seed funding, but I'll spare you the details.
What's shocked me is how expensive this whole game is.
Looked into high-authority outlets like WSJ, Bloomberg, TechCrunch, VentureBeat, NYT, and similar. Contacted a few directly - most didn't reply. Then spoke with PR agencies who claim they can help with placements or sponsored editorial. The numbers are honestly insane:
💰 $15k for something like Inc or VentureBeat
💰 $25k for a TechCrunch hosted article where you write it yourself
Maybe I'm naive, but that feels absolutely ridiculous. I get that serious publications have value - authority, trust, backlinks, brand credibility. But at what point does the ROI just not make sense?
Are these actually normal market prices, or is this the "AI startup tax" because everyone assumes you've raised money?
For those who've done this before - what's the realistic way to get strong exposure and high-authority backlinks without dropping fifteen to twenty-five thousand per article?
Options I'm weighing:
🔸 Work with niche publications first
🔸 Build relationships directly with journalists
🔸 Use HARO / Qwoted / Featured-type platforms
🔸 Publish data reports and pitch them as stories
🔸 Go all-in on founder-led LinkedIn and Twitter
🔸 Ignore big media, put budget into SEO content, partnerships, and affiliates
🔸 Only pay for placements when the publication is hyper-relevant
I'm genuinely trying to understand if this is just how the market works now, or if I'm looking in the wrong places.
Would love to hear from people who've actually secured meaningful PR or media exposure for a SaaS without burning a stupid amount of cash.
