Launching a fashion content app on a shoestring budget is a special kind of hell. I've just started one - image/carousel based, curated outfit posts - and I'm trying to land the first 10-15 micro-creators. The ask is intentionally simple: they just cross-post whatever they already make for Instagram (outfit photos, carousels). No new shoots, no extra effort. Budget is roughly £300/month total, so about £30/creator for 8 posts a month.
I've got a few burning questions for anyone who's done early-stage creator seeding:
1️⃣ Flat retainer vs pay-per-performance - which retains better on a low budget?
2️⃣ Since it's just cross-posting existing content, is even £30 necessary, or could a 'founding creator' deal (like equity or early access) work?
3️⃣ Should I seed content myself first? Or does that backfire and make the platform feel fake?
4️⃣ Best low-cost channel to find micro-creators - is it still hashtags + DMs, or is there something smarter?
5️⃣ How do I stop creators churning in months 2-3 when the platform is still tiny and quiet?
From what I've seen, early seeding is less about cash and more about making them feel like insiders with momentum. If they believe they're shaping something, they'll tolerate low payouts. I'm focusing on creators whose aesthetics already vibe with the platform so it feels cohesive from day one. Making them feel seen and appreciated (not just upload slaves) is probably the real retention lever. But I'd love to hear hard-won lessons from anyone who's done it.
