There's something deeply frustrating about putting in all the work to get a business verified on WhatsApp, only to have the Meta number show up instead of your carefully chosen display name. It feels like building a storefront and having the wrong sign out front. I helped a client through this recently, and it took some digging to sort out.
They'd gone through the embedded signup flow, selected Display Name only, and their portfolio was verified - WhatsApp Manager even said "Name Visible to Customers". But on both mobile and desktop, Meta's number kept appearing instead. The branding gap was costing them trust with new customers.
After some trial and error, here's what actually worked. First attempt: calling the Register API again. That forced the system to re-pull the display name, and it flipped over within a few hours. Second scenario with another client: the display name kept getting rejected even though it matched their domain exactly. We ended up changing the display name to something slightly different, then switching it back to the original - for whatever reason, the system accepted it the second time around.
If you're not Meta verified and just want your business name to appear, the route is a bit murkier. There's no clean workaround that I've seen without going through the verification pipeline. The algorithm doesn't seem to prioritise display names from unverified accounts, which feels like another way the platform pushes you toward paying for verification.
It's one of those quirks where the infrastructure doesn't match the user expectation. You'd think a verified business name would just... show up. But the A9 equivalent here is that WhatsApp Manager's backend has its own rules about propagation. Patience and a re-registration call usually sort it out, but if that fails, try the name swap trick. Worth noting for anyone else banging their head against this.
