So I'm running a perfectly legit WhatsApp Business API setup - sending automated template messages to new customers who sign up on my site. We're talking maybe a couple hundred messages a day, nothing mental. I even buried a clause in my TOS saying they'll get WhatsApp messages. But Meta keeps slapping my account with a spam label.
Tried everything: switching between marketing and utility templates, adding CTAs, making sure there's an opt-out. Nothing sticks. A colleague pointed out the obvious - TOS isn't consent. Users need to explicitly opt in for WhatsApp messages, not just sign up for a service and then get surprised by a random ping. If they're annoyed, they block and report, and Meta's algorithm goes haywire.
Honestly, the whole thing is a faff. You'd think a clause in the TOS would cover it, but nope - you've got to ask them upfront, like 'Do you want marketing via WhatsApp?' and if they don't tick that box, you're screwed. And don't even get me started on how asking for a price list or a catalog doesn't count as marketing consent. Fuck Meta indeed, but that's the game.
Anyone else been through this circus? How'd you get your account clean?
