Common problem, and one I've run into more than once.
getting the reading level right for a specific ICP is one of the hardest nuts to crack in marketing. the vocabulary, attention span, and what actually resonates are night and day between, say, a 55‑year‑old CFO and a 28‑year‑old plumber. in life sciences, i see the same thing: a CRNA and an anaesthetist work the same field but from completely different perspectives, so the sensitivities differ hugely.
before you blame the writer, scrutinise the ICP document. demographics alone won't cut it - it should cover:
- Role and day‑to‑day responsibilities
- Domain expertise and vocabulary
- Core business challenges
- Preferred content formats and channels
- Reading behaviour - skim or deep dive
- Common objections they carry
- What motivates them to change or act
The goal isn't to write for people as smart as the author, or for people who share the author's tastes. it's to write for the readers you want to influence, from their point of view. Took me a while to learn that.
Have you got a documented ICP, or are you relying on assumptions about who your audience is?
