i've been working in SEO for well over a decade now and recently threw myself into building an indie game that captures the raw, chaotic spirit of early SEO culture. The story kicks off in a Kyiv dorm room back in 2011 - you play a student trying to survive clients, affiliate marketing, Google updates, link exchanges, shady forums, and all the sleepless nights that defined old-school SEO.
I'm aiming for total authenticity, so I want to hear from others who lived through that era. what absolutely has to be in there? Tools, memes, workflows, inside jokes, painful moments - anything that would make younger SEOs today raise an eyebrow.
So far I've got the basics covered: Skype client chats, AdSense, cheap VPS hosting, keyword stuffing, pirate software, and overnight site launches. But there's so much more.
A colleague mentioned white text on a white background, size-1 fonts at the top of the page, meta keywords, and IFTTT - that little tool that predated Hootsuite for pushing posts from WordPress to Facebook to Twitter. Also WordPress.com versus WordPress.org, PBNs and literal link farms, Google Plus, and Google Authorship. another person added blog comment spam - the classic white-on-white trick - and the eternal importance of the keywords meta tag. PBNs are still a thing today, truth be told.
What else am I missing? the vibe, the tools, the nightmare moments - bring them on.
