I've been working as a GA4 implementation specialist for almost 15 years. Got off to a strong start, moved into senior roles quickly, but my career has plateaued since then.
Throughout my career, managers have praised my technical accuracy and problem-solving skills. But I've consistently been told I lack the client-facing and leadership skills needed to move into higher-level roles. in a few cases, I've been let go because I wasn't strong enough in client meetings. They're probably right. I'm introverted, socially anxious, and not great at small talk or relationship-building. When presenting dashboards or migration plans, I get straight to the point instead of 'selling' the work in the room.
As a result, I've never been seen as someone who could lead a team or move into an analytics director role. Hit a ceiling.
I'm 40 now and unsure about the long-term path. The analytics world can be youth-focused, and I worry about what happens when you're an older senior specialist who hasn't moved into management.
Been freelancing for the past five years after realising the traditional agency ladder wasn't for me. it works reasonably well, but I'm not convinced it's stable long-term.
Has anyone been in this situation? What are the options for experienced technical specialists who are good at the craft but not suited to management, networking, or client-facing roles?
