I spent three months testing four Semrush alternatives. Ahrefs was decent - their Lite plan comes in at about £99 a month, but the keyword data didn't feel as rich compared to what I was pulling from Semrush before. Moz? Honestly, I'd rather not talk about it. SE Ranking is cheap but I noticed it missed backlinks on a regular basis, which is a dealbreaker when you're tracking competitor profiles.
SpyFu I actually liked for PPC, but when I migrated everything over a weekend, i quickly realised it couldn't track local pack rankings. My biggest client emailed me mid-migration asking why their Monday report was late - I had to make up some excuse about a 'system update'. Nearly lost the account over a tool experiment nobody asked me to run.
The reporting UI on Semrush still annoys me - too many clicks to export a basic report. But the whole quarter basically proved I can't cost-cut my way out of a £139 monthly invoice. Now I'm back where I started, feeling like I wasted three months of billable time.
anyone else done this cycle, or is it just me being cheap? Do we all just end up back with what was already working?
