Retention marketing pays my bills, but sales recruiters won't leave me alone. BDR/SDR callbacks hit roughly double the rate of my marketing applications. If you made the jump and went back, what did you like or hate, and what pulled you back?

Sales experience compounds hard in marketing. My two-year sales stint before moving into growth taught me three things that still pay off daily:

objection handling, which is basically CRO with a pulse
pipeline discipline that translates straight into funnel math and CAC/LTV ratios
How customers actually talk, something no keyword research tool or dashboard will ever teach you

Someone who has closed deals over the phone writes far better landing pages than someone who has only ever read reports. The spike in callbacks isn't a fluke, it's a signal worth listening to. The worst case is you spend a year learning that sales isn't for you and come back to marketing with actual customer conversations under your belt. That's still a net win.

sales is the best customer research out there, and it's technically free. You get the real objections, the actual pain points, the exact weird words people use for their problems. No guessing, no persona workshops, just truth with a side of rejection. drag that intel back into marketing and suddenly the copy sounds like a human wrote it. creativity-wise? Total coin flip depending on the company. Some sales roles are basically improv night, others are reading scripts older than my career. sales and marketing sit side by side whether companies admit it or not, so time on the floor makes the marketing brain dangerous
