Ten years in editorial and brand content. Five months into a content strategy role at an agency on the paid social side, and the job turned out to be shockingly analytics-heavy. Every two weeks I build performance decks across multiple campaigns: pulling VTR/CTR/CPM/CPC by platform, slicing by audience × channel × asset × theme, root-causing why things underperformed, then writing creative recommendations like it's nothing.
Honestly, the insights-to-recommendations part I enjoy. The data pulling and root-cause deep-dives feel closer to a performance/media analyst role than content strategy, if we're being candid. And the reports are kicking my butt. The insights feel like a strong POV, but my boss tears my decks apart every single time. Part of it is definitely me being new. Part of it, I'm slowly realizing, is that I just don't like this work.
Is this level of analysis normal for all content strategists? Or did I wander into the one corner of the field where spreadsheets run the show? Are there content strategy roles that are lighter on analytics and heavier on storytelling and creative direction? Asking for the version of me that's currently rebuilding deck number four at 6pm.
Would love to hear how this shakes out on your teams. My sanity and slide 12 thank you in advance.
