Half a decade of scrubbing toilets while holding a master's degree in creative writing. Go ahead, insert the jokes.
Teaching was the original plan, and when that collapsed I fell into a custodian job. The paycheck is survivable. The feeling of being permanently stuck is not.
Recently I sat down with the marketing manager at my company to explore options, and the more she broke down her day to day, the more it hooked me. Told her I'd designed some logos and brochures and even done some B2B outreach, but that comes with zero portfolio and zero real marketing experience. She was kind and genuinely helpful, then got very blunt: career-wise, I'm screwed. Her advice was to pitch local businesses on freelance marketing work. Cool plan, except the same conversation just declared me unqualified, and honestly I doubt I'd land a single client.
so here I sit in career purgatory, convinced I'm wasting my potential, scraping by on about forty grand a year.
Straight answers only. Is another degree worth it? Is there a smarter way to break in from scratch? Or be brutally honest and tell me not to bother at all.
