Oh, I remember this one all too well. A few years back, a "prestigious" magazine reached out to feature my brand. I was flattered, did the call, and within five minutes they'd slid pricing packages into the conversation. Didn't even ask what our product does. That's when I learned the hard way.
your skepticism is spot on. First thing i do now is check whether the publication actually has a real audience or if they just survive by charging founders for ego boosts. Look at their social engagement - are real people commenting, sharing, or actually reading those articles? Do they rank for anything non-self-referential? and crucially, do other founders mention them without being paid?
If they pass that sniff test, negotiate hard on outcomes, not fluff. Ask them where the article gets distributed, whether backlinks are included, whether the feature stays live permanently, who actually writes it, whether you get to approve edits. Most importantly, ask if their audience overlaps with your actual customers or if it's just other founders patting each other on the back. that last one usually kills the deal.
