I see these "free website" offers roll in like clockwork. Free only works as a foot in the door, a teaser for something paid. And honestly? Free never lands with the grace people expect. The recipient rarely values it. Broke my heart to learn that, but it's true. Ninety-nine percent of the time, it's wasted energy.
Years ago, I tried to help a sweet little boutique-a family-run place with dusty shelves and sun-faded signs. All they had to do was say yes. Let me build them an online store. Let me train them. Let me use that process as a case study for teaching others. That was my only ask.
I spent months weaving myself into their world. Afternoon chats over lukewarm tea. In-person visits to their shop, where I'd run my fingers over hand-painted ceramics and imagine them glowing on a screen. I brought my own family there, bought little trinkets to show support. I laid my cards on the table, wallet open. Wanted nothing back except the right to use that site as a training demo in a closed ecosystem.
They didn't even own a domain name. I was going to buy it, build the whole thing, and hand them the keys-free and clear. Imagine owning a strip mall and offering a tenant a year of free rent, plus someone to stock their shelves and man the till 24/7. That's what an online store should feel like. Most people never see it that way. That's why so many fail.
But this family? They couldn't wrap their heads around my motive. Kept eyeing me like I was sleazy, like I was plotting something underhanded. Never mind that my reputation in the community was solid, that I'd helped a dozen other businesses thrive.
Economic winds shifted. They did a midnight run on their lease, locked the doors, and vanished. Could have had every last piece of inventory online. Could have transitioned to a home-based operation with all my support, no charge. Instead, they chose to walk away.
Some people just can't accept their own worth. And when they can't see value in themselves, they can't see it in anyone else's offer either.
Tomorrow, someone else will post about free sites to grow their portfolio. And the cycle repeats.
