i've just built my first webapp - think a simplified news digest, but for research papers. It provides easy-to-understand summaries of new papers across major topics. honestly, monetisation isn't on my radar right now, I just want to get it into real hands, collect feedback, and see if it actually helps people. If traction picks up, I'll invest in upgrading the backend and expanding.
Budget is tight, so I haven't bought a custom domain yet. the big question: is a .vercel.app subdomain going to kill my chances of getting initial users? Will it hurt trust, traffic, or SEO at this stage?
I've heard a few takes. One colleague said they'd never heard of Vercel, so they wouldn't judge it like a Wix or AngelFire site - they'd just assume the whole thing was mine. But they'd associate the site with Vercel. Another person mentioned that when they see a subdomain, they immediately think: "This is someone's little pet project, not something serious."
I'm leaning toward the idea that for early traction, content and value matter more than the domain name. But I'd love to hear from others who've launched on free subdomains - did it hold you back, or were you able to prove the concept first?
