My CPG company just nuked the entire category management department. I was an associate category manager, now I'm a Product Marketing Manager with zero onboarding, zero processes, and zero leadership. The director who was supposed to be my boss quit without notice, so the digital marketing director absorbed my team as a favor.
Here's the scope they dumped on me: go-to-market strategy, product naming, packaging copy, positioning, end-to-end buyer journey mapping, and consumer segmentation. I have support - copywriters, insights, designers for PDPs and kit boxes, brand team, digital team, social team - but no playbook.
The gaps are real. Never built a GTM strategy from scratch. Product naming feels like guessing. Positioning is a nightmare because most of our stuff is ODM - we're not meaningfully better than competitors, and I refuse to bullshit people. My background is a marketing degree plus being the only marketer at a small IT MSP. That's it.
I'm not quitting. I like my coworkers and the core business. Leadership is just incompetent. I need to build this skillset fast. Books, channels, newsletters, frameworks - what actually works for CPG PMM? Especially the positioning and GTM pieces when you're selling parity products.
Also open to hearing how others survived being dropped into a strategic role with no safety net.
