pretty wild trajectory when I lay it out: started around 37k in 2017, hit 55k two years later, then 80k by 2021. From there it jumped to 110k, 150k, 220k, and now 250k - all at the same company, zero commission, no sales quota. that's not normal.
The pattern wasn't magic. i stuck around long enough to hit a genuine ceiling, learned the role above mine cold, and made sure my departure would actually hurt the business. Not in a hostage way - just became the person leadership dreads losing because the institutional knowledge and output are too expensive to replace.
Meanwhile I'd interview for roles one rung up the ladder, rewrite resume bullets to mirror those JDs, and walk in already fluent in the problems that level solves. half the interview is just confirming you've already been doing the work.
hard truth: nobody pays a premium for showing up and checking boxes. you don't need to bleed company colors, but you do need to be the reason a project ships on time or a margin holds. And yeah, a chunk of it's right place, right time - but you only catch those breaks if you've already done the work to be ready
