Prime Day is one of the biggest events of the year for ecommerce brands. I've been doing this a while and here's what actually moves the needle.
First, eligibility is where most people trip up. You need to submit deals early - the window opens weeks in advance and spots go quickly. Amazon typically requires:
📌 Deal price at least 15% off your lowest price in the past 30 days
📌 FBA fulfilment
📌 Review rating of 3.5 stars or higher
📌 Enough inventory to cover the event
Second, your ad strategy before Prime Day is just as important. In the days leading up, sales often dip because shoppers hold out for the big day. So I pull back PPC bids then - no point burning budget on clicks that won't convert. When Prime Day hits, I go all in.
On the day itself, I use budget rules inside campaign manager to stop my ads from running out mid-afternoon. Most sales come later in the day, so if your budget caps at noon you're toast. I set automatic increases to keep me live through the busiest window.
A few other tips I swear by:
🌟 Stack a coupon on top of your deal - that badge makes your listing stand out in search
🌟 Optimise your main image and title beforehand - more eyes means more competition
🌟 Keep an eye on inventory - one colleague mentioned using automated alerts to avoid stockouts mid-event, especially if you're juggling travel
Also, from experience: competitor analysis becomes crucial in the weeks leading up. Prices can shift dramatically, and suddenly your 15% discount isn't competitive. I check my main competitors every few days starting a month out to make sure my deal pricing is still sharp.
someone asked about balancing discount vs volume vs profitability - it's a tough one. my approach is to set a floor margin I'm not willing to cross, then work backwards from there. The extra volume during Prime Day often makes up for lower margins, but you need to know your numbers upfront. testing in the weeks before can help gauge the sweet spot.
Would love to hear what others do - especially around ad creatives or bundling strategies!!
