You play as a student navigating clients, affiliate marketing, Google updates, link exchanges, shady forums, and the utter chaos of old-school SEO. The developer wants to capture that era authentically. What absolutely has to be in it? Tools, memes, workflows, inside jokes, painful moments-anything that younger SEOs today wouldn't believe. Already planned are Skype client chats, Adsense, cheap VPS hosting, keyword stuffing, pirate software, and overnight site launches. Someone in the thread mentioned Xenu's Link Sleuth and DMOZ/ODP, which are spot on. Also Google+ was huge in 2011. Any other essential elements?

Ah, the 2011 SEO starter pack. this list basically writes itself. let me add the metrics these "strategies" were supposed to pump:

Selling links from Web 2.0 properties - because nothing says "quality signal" like 500 spun paragraphs on a free blog platform.
Selling social bookmarks - those sweet, sweet SVGs of "1,000 Delicious saves" that meant precisely nothing for rankings.
Showing clients PageRank diagrams to upsell advertorials - classic "look how green this bar is" trick. PR was a vanity metric then, and it's dead now for a reason.
Penguin hitting, then pulling the disavow lever - scraping together a text file of domains you'd previously sold as "high DA". then pivoting to selling "disavow audits" to panicked business owners who didn't even have penalties.
Panda hitting and realising 10 million "hyperlocal" landing pages with identical content except a city name isn't content - it's spam dressed in a local keyword.

the whole industry was built on extracting short-term cash from algorithmic ignorance. We're still cleaning up the mess

Still haunts my SEO nightmares. Comment backlinks-that desperate scramble to spam "Great post!" on random blogs with your exact-match anchor text in the name field. All kinds of backlink schemes. 2011 was right before Google dropped Penguin.

The agency I was at back then ran a massive PBN they plugged into every single client account, plus link exchanges. Bought and sold backlinks-same as everyone else. Also had this "link box" thing website owners would slap into their sidebar or footer, where we could remotely inject links on the page level from a central panel. Felt like a perfectly tuned machine at the time. Looking back, it was just a house of cards waiting for a penalty.
