Been rolling out WhatsApp for client OTPs and alerts lately. Same pattern every time-vendors don't give you a raw API pipe. You get a full SaaS bundle: dashboards, chatbots, CRM modules, and a fat markup on every message on top of Meta's per-message pricing.
For transactional use cases, this is just infrastructure-like SMS or email. Unit economics get destroyed when you're paying both the SaaS subscription and a margin per send.
so I'm building a different approach: treat WhatsApp as infra, not SaaS. no markup-pay Meta direct. Just API + webhooks, no forced UI layer. same schema as Meta, so zero lock-in. Flat infra fee, not per-message margin.
Before going deeper, sanity check from people who've actually scaled this. Do you see WhatsApp as infra you integrate into your product? Or do most teams genuinely need that all-in-one SaaS layer? Honest takes welcome-including why this idea might crash and burn.
