Layoffs just nuked my agency gig, and I'm dusting off the resume to apply for senior copywriter and ACD roles. But the deeper I dig into creative strategy, the more I realize I've already been doing half of that job. The overlap between creative strategy and copywriting is way bigger than the titles suggest.
Has anyone here made that leap? If so, what do you wish you knew before you did?
My understanding is that strategists shape the messaging architecture and keep it cohesive across every piece of creative, which can mean less hands-on writing depending on the agency or brand. I've absolutely owned chunks of that work on past projects, so I believe the leap is real. Still, I want guidance from someone who's actually crossed this bridge.
One person described a killer exercise: take a creative decision you made and map it backwards from the outcome, to the inspiration, to the consumer data that supports it, to the business objective, then to the business goal. That reverse path shows you can sell in a direction the way a strategist does. Flip it around for planning: client wants more sales, bundle products to raise average purchase price, advertise to a specific human insight, land on the creative. That mental model made the overlap finally click for me.
A fellow laid-off writer told me they got zero bites applying to copywriting and creative director roles, but once they started applying to strategist positions with virtually the same resume, the interviews started rolling in. Another strategist friend warned that pure strategy is getting gatekeepy, so creative strategy hybrids that still expect writing might be the strongest way in.
What helped you make the switch? Any pitfalls, books, or portfolio advice? I'm all ears.
