I've spent years in growth marketing, getting my hands dirty with everything from page speed optimisation to structured data. But somehow, when a recruiter sees 'SEO Specialist' on a job spec, my application goes straight in the bin. Sound familiar?
Here's the situation: I've found a role paying well, but they demand 'at least 1 year of SEO/GEO experience'. The requirements include developing search strategies (Google, AI-driven search), technical SEO, schema, content optimisation, and proficiency with Ahrefs, Semrush, Search Console - and a vision for Generative Engine Optimization.
now, I'm technically stronger than most SEOs I've met. I can write the code, fix crawl errors, implement JSON-LD, and I run my own projects that rank for their brand terms. But I've never held the title. I don't have a portfolio of organic traffic wins or ranking case studies. And even if I start today, I won't have a 'success story' by interview day.
So to the experienced folks here:
- How do I get past the '1 year experience' filter? Do I come clean about the lack of formal title, or try to frame my hands-on work as equivalent?
- What technical trump cards can a developer play against candidates who know the tools but can't read a line of code? GEO techniques maybe?
- Without traffic data or major ranking stories, what can I present as proof in an interview? My own sites? Technical audits?
This job could be a game-changer for me. I know I can deliver. I just need to get my foot in the door. Any advice on how you'd handle this if you were in my position would be gold.
