Built an app called StakeUp that kills empty promises between friends - you don't get points unless you actually prove you did the task (gym session, study block, whatever). No proof, no rewards. It's a clean activation loop, at least on paper.

Friends have told me it's a solid idea, but that's not data. I've got zero traction and zero marketing experience. Target is uni and high school students - I'm a student myself so it's the obvious beachhead. But where the hell do I start? No budget for paid ads, no audience, just a product I believe works.

Anyone cracked this kind of social accountability niche? I need to get first 100 active users before I'm just building in a vacuum.

First step is always audience definition. Go hyperlocal - if there's a nearby uni, that's a goldmine for early adopters. Before you spend a penny on ads or fret over positioning, you need to get groups of real friends using this consistently for at least two or three months. Your in‑person mates saying it's good is politeness, not data. Actual behaviour is what counts. build a few private groups, get them hooked on accountability loops with genuine stakes, and watch how they actually use it - or abandon it. that behavioural data tells you everything about whether this solves a real problem or just sounds good in conversation.

Once you have fifty or so active users regularly completing challenges and redeeming rewards, then your marketing angles become obvious because you'll know which use case actually works. Right now you could tell people to download it and nobody would stick around - the app isn't sticky yet without network effects. Spend the next month obsessing over making one friend group addicted to it. nail that experience, then go recruit five more groups the same way. Network signups and word‑of‑mouth from working groups beat any marketing spend when you're this early. Trust me, I've seen enough log files to know that vanity metrics from early demos are worthless - real usage patterns are the only thing that matter.
