Started rank and rent in Australia two months ago with zero SEO or website experience. Now I'm wondering if the market here is even viable long term.
I'm based in Sydney. Two months back I fell down the SEO/rank and rent rabbit hole with no background in websites, Google Search Console, GBP, or domains. Since then I've built around 15 sites and 3 Google Business Profiles across local service niches - mainly concreting, granny flats, fencing. Most are suburb/location specific, built on exact-match domains with local SEO pages. Everything learned through trial and error.
Surprisingly, I saw early movement. One site for concrete services in Melbourne jumped to page one after a rebuild. Some low-competition suburb keywords ranked fast. A few sites started getting impressions and clicks within days.
But the challenges hit hard. Biggest one: population. In the US, cities and suburbs have hundreds of thousands or millions of people. Here, many suburbs are tiny. You can dominate a suburb keyword and the search volume is negligible.
Then there's Google Business Profiles. I've got three. One got flagged almost as soon as another got verified. I know tricks to get GBPs verified in Australia, but the real nightmare is reviews. I genuinely don't understand how people scale reviews without eventually looking suspicious. Getting real reviews at scale for rank and rent feels insanely difficult here compared to the US.
Another demotivator: there's one company in Sydney that seems to run every niche and suburb imaginable - concreting, plumbing, electricians, fencing, all of them. Every suburb. Makes me wonder if local SEO here is already cornered by a few big players.
Also feels like Google keeps pushing websites lower: ads first, then GBPs, sometimes Reddit or directories, then finally actual websites.
On the flip side, this journey accidentally taught me a lot. In two months I've picked up website development, local SEO, Google Ads, AI automation workflows, and basic lead generation. Even if rank and rent fails, the skills are valuable.
I'm trying to figure out whether this is worth doubling down on in Australia or if the market here is too small compared to the US. Honest opinions from people doing local SEO right now would help.
