Manager used Claude for analysis - help!

Nothing gets my blood pumping like a manager who gets bored of waiting for the actual analyst and decides to become a data scientist overnight. ours fed a CSV of return reasons into Claude, got back a pretty HTML file, and sent it straight to the product team. now I'm supposed to validate that hot mess without just redoing every bloody step manually.

someone suggested using AI to check the AI's work. Oh brilliant, because hallucinations are like herpes - you just get a double dose. i'm not keen on multiplying the errors.

The only sane advice I've heard is to demand the SQL or Python behind it, rerun the numbers, spot-check a few rows, and trust the code over the summary. But that still feels like half the effort. Anyone cracked this without pulling your hair out?

Treating AI like a junior analyst is a generous comparison-most junior analysts at least know when they're out of their depth. The real problem isn't hallucination, it's that the confidence score on AI output gives people a false sense of security. You validate the logic, but the business context? that's where the whole thing falls apart. Having AI validate AI is just layering one confident guess on top of another. i've seen way too many people skip the hard part-actually looking at the raw data-because the AI "looked right." That's not validation, that's delegation with extra steps.

Use planning mode first and make sure it understands the task first. After it performs the analysis I always ask for the SQL in a file and will just read it to see if the logic makes sense. If you know your data well then reading the SQL should be enough

Best approach I've found is sampling plus reproducibility. Ask it to show every transformation, filter, and calculation step, then manually verify a small but representative subset against the raw CSV. If the logic holds and the samples check out, confidence rockets without needing to redo the entire analysis. saves hours of second-guessing! 🙂

Yeah, I get what you're saying-it's not exactly a scalable play if the whole team's just chucking CSV files into Claude. Honestly, I don't think that's a great plan to begin with either.

Exactly this. I rely on the same approach when using AI for any analysis. After years of running those reports manually for our business, I know what "normal" looks well enough to spot anomalies almost immediately. The tool is useful, but without that internal benchmark for validation, it's just guessing.
