The pressure to niche down right now is actually exhausting. Since finishing uni about a year ago, I've been deep in the job hunt, stacking up certifications and doing endless freelance bits to keep my portfolio from looking stagnant. Moving to a city like Chicago for agency life is the dream, and I'm currently on the lookout for part-time work there just to get my foot in the door while I build up my portfolio on the side. But every time I update my CV, I hit the same wall: do I need to be a specialist or can I keep doing a bit of everything?

Interning at a smaller firm taught me that being a generalist is basically a superpower. When you're in a small team, you have to be able to pivot from copy to creative strategy in a heartbeat. Having that primary role is essential, but being able to contribute across the board made me feel indispensable. Lately, though, it feels like the industry wants to force us into boxes that don't really fit. Presenting yourself as both a copywriter and a data analyst seems almost impossible without looking like you aren't serious about either. Why does it feel like we have to choose between being creative or being analytical?

Someone I know with nearly a decade in media pointed out that most people eventually split into two camps, Creative or Media. Within those worlds, you've got these very specific lanes like strategy, research, or hands-on execution. Staying broad means you risk becoming a "Jack of all trades" who can speak the language but always has to defer to the experts when things get technical. Choosing to specialise makes you that go-to expert who has all the answers, which is great until that specific niche changes overnight. But is that actually safer in the long run?

Future-proofing is the other massive worry that keeps me up. With AI being integrated into everything from data collection to creative production, agencies are constantly talking about "efficiencies." This shift makes the whole industry feel like everyone is replaceable. Agencies are already using AI for overarching campaign strategies and copy development, which makes picking a lane feel like a massive gamble. Should a machine do the baseline work for a specialist, is it better to be the broad thinker who manages the tool instead?

Navigating the freelance world while trying to find a stable agency home is its own kind of chaos. You're constantly jumping between being your own account manager, your own creative director, and your own bookkeeper, all before lunch. It gives you a taste of everything, which is brilliant, but then you look at these massive corporate agency job descriptions and they want you to have spent five years only looking at Pinterest boards or only staring at Google Analytics. At smaller agencies, there is so much room to play with brand strategy, social content, and activation planning all at once. Larger agencies seem to want you in a very specific, narrow role from day one. That leaves us with a frustrating trade-off between getting any job just to get in the door or holding out for a role that actually lets you use your full range of skills. Does the hybrid marketer still have a place or are we being forced to pick a side?
