I keep seeing the same cold email habits kill campaigns that had a real chance. Same pattern I see with app campaigns: weak hooks, thin copy, and no role-specific angle can tank performance fast.

You might not agree with all of these. That is fine. But these are the ones I keep fixing.

Making emails short just to be short.

Under 200 words is usually a good target. Under 50 almost never is. A cold email still needs a trigger, a real pain point, and a clear reason to reply. Cutting those out does not make the message cleaner. It makes it hollow. Short should mean tight, not empty.

Reverse psychology CTAs.

"Would you be opposed to hearing more?" People know what this is. If the offer is useful and the timing is right, no trick is needed. A direct ask from a relevant sender beats a clever one almost every time.

Throwing five pain points into one email.

A long list of everything you solve sounds thorough. It usually reads desperate. One sharp pain explored well beats five surface-level problems stacked together. Go narrow and deep. That is where the replies come from.

Skipping follow-ups.

The best first email still needs a follow-up. Prospects are busy. They are not sitting around waiting to respond. Follow-ups are not harassment when they add context. They are how the message shows up when someone finally has the headspace to care.

Fake subject lines.

"URGENT." "RE: our last conversation." "Quick question." If the subject line has nothing to do with the body, the prospect feels tricked before reading. Once trust is damaged in line one, the rest of the email has an uphill fight.

Pitching features instead of outcomes.

Nobody cares what the product does. They care what changes after they use it. Same as app store screenshots or onboarding screens, capabilities are boring until they connect to a result. Show the outcome in a situation that mirrors theirs.

Bonus. Sending the same email to every role.

A CFO and a CRO may sit in the same company, but they do not care about the same metrics, risks, or headaches. Generic copy might save time. It also makes the campaign feel irrelevant.

Fix these and the campaign is already ahead of most cold email I see running. The winners are usually not the flashiest. They are the ones that feel specific, honest, and easy to answer.
