My wife and I just wrapped up a full year of bootstrapping a new consumer product while both holding down full time jobs. She's a nurse and I work in product development engineering, so this whole journey has been nights, weekends, and a lot of stubbornness.

We've been developing a new type of plant pot built around a lightweight EVA body with hidden internal features focused on improving root aeration, drainage, moisture balance, durability, and portability. Basically trying to rethink the traditional ceramic or terracotta pot from both a materials and functionality standpoint.

We recently got approved for Kickstarter after way more work than we ever expected. Manufacturing, tooling revisions, supplier negotiations, CAD work, shipping and fulfillment research, branding, campaign building, content creation. Honestly, the process has been pretty humbling.

What we're struggling with now is the part we have almost zero experience in. Actually getting the product in front of the right people.

Everywhere online we hear run ads, build organic social, hire influencers, do PR outreach, build a community, email marketing. But as first time founders without a huge budget, it's hard to tell what actually matters versus what just sounds good on startup Twitter or LinkedIn.

For those of you who launched physical products or small consumer brands, what actually moved the needle early on? Where did your first traction come from? What was a waste of time or money? If you had a limited budget, where would you focus first?

We're trying to stay lean and scrappy and avoid making expensive beginner mistakes. Would genuinely appreciate any advice from people who've been through it.

A colleague in the thread made a point that really stuck with me. They said don't try ads, influencers, PR, email, and community all at once because that is how people burn cash and learn nothing. For a physical product, start with the smallest channel that gives you direct contact with the exact buyer so you hear objections fast. If Kickstarter is part of the plan, the real work is building a warm list before launch day, not hoping the platform finds you. Early traction usually comes from one tight audience and a lot of founder hustle, not broad paid spend.

Another person pointed out something that makes a lot of sense. The thing that actually moved the needle for most physical product launches they have seen is getting your first 10 to 15 customers to leave reviews before you do anything else. Not because reviews are everything, but because without them every other channel underperforms. You run ads and people click, check your product page, see zero reviews and leave. You get influencer coverage and same thing happens. Reviews are the conversion layer that makes everything else work. So the first job is getting real humans to buy, use the product, and tell the world.

For Kickstarter specifically, your early backers are your best asset. They already believed in you enough to back an unproven product. Within 24 hours of them receiving it, ask for a review or testimonial. Give them the exact link, make it one click. Most will help if you ask at the right moment.

For first traction beyond backers, communities specific to your product category, niche Facebook groups, and micro influencers under 10k followers who actually use products like yours tend to work well. They are cheaper, more authentic, and their audiences trust them more than big influencers. Ads and PR come after you have social proof. Before that you are paying to send people to a page that does not convert.

The through line in all of this seems to be research. Figure out who is actually going to purchase your product and then focus your energy on the channels they already use. Everything else is just noise until you have that foundation.
