I've sent a lot of cold emails that got ignored. Here's what finally started working. It's not rocket science, but most people skip the fundamentals.

Risk vs reward is the first thing. If you're asking someone to take a risk-their time, attention, reputation-you need to make the reward obvious. Lower the risk with personalization that shows you actually did your homework, give away free value upfront, offer a risk reversal. The reward has to be something they actually want, not what you think they need.

Focus on them, not you. I see emails that are all "we do this, we helped that guy make a million." Nobody cares. You're supposed to be a doctor diagnosing a problem, not a sales guy shoving a solution. Use "you" and "your" way more than "I" or "we." And stop pretending you know exactly what they need before you've even talked to them. That's suspicious as hell.

Free value is obvious but underused. Put yourself in their shoes-what would they actually want? A short guide, a case study breakdown, a free trial. Something that takes minimal effort on their end. If it's good, it sells your service for you.

Awareness level is a tricky one. If you're selling SEO to a plumber, they barely know what SEO is. Talk benefits and outcomes, not the mechanics. If you're selling to a marketing director, they know the jargon-hit them with specifics, case studies, results. Write at their level.

Lean on your strengths. Got killer case studies? Lead with those. Got a virtually risk-free offer? Use it. If you're just starting, create a low-risk offer and give away value like it's going out of style. Don't pretend you're something you're not.

Demand capture vs demand generation-nobody talks about this. Some services are like bookkeeping: everyone knows they need it, they're just looking for someone now. That's capture. Others are like AI voice agents: nobody knows they need it until you explain it. You're generating demand. Different copy approaches for each.

Relevant personalization isn't optional anymore. Not just "saw your LinkedIn post"-that's lazy. Tie it to your offer. Why did that piece of info make you think they'd benefit from what you're selling? If you can't answer that, don't send the email.

And keep it short. 25 to 75 words max. Every word needs to earn its place. If they can't read it in five seconds and get the point, you're losing them.

Put these together and you'll stop wondering why nobody replies.
