if your AI chats keep getting cluttered or you keep losing context mid-campaign, you're probably using the wrong tool for the job.

with all the buzz around OpenClaw, Claude Cowork, and Claude Code, people throw around "skills" and "agents" like they're the same thing. they aren't. and using the wrong one at the wrong time will actually slow you down.

Skills run inside your main chat window. that gives you better context because the AI remembers everything you've discussed. but your conversation fills up faster, which means you'll hit your chat limits sooner.

Sub-agents run outside of your main chat window. that keeps your chat clean so you can keep working longer. But here's the tradeoff.. whatever the sub-agent does won't show up in your conversation history. it's like handing a task to a coworker in another room. they'll get it done, but you won't have the details of how they got there.

so how do you decide which one to use? it comes down to one question.... do you need to go back and forth on this, or do you just need it done?

If you're working on something that takes a lot of iteration and refining, use a skill. you want that full context sitting right there in your chat so the AI can build on everything you've already discussed together.

If the task has clear steps and you don't really need to tweak it multiple times, send it to a sub-agent. get it done without cluttering up your main workspace.

Let me give you two quick examples so this clicks.

Example 1: Say you're writing the copy for a new native ad landing page. you're going to be testing different headlines, reworking the offer section, tightening up the call to action, adjusting the flow.. that's a skill task. you need the AI to remember every round of changes so it keeps building on what's already working instead of starting from scratch each time.

example 2: Now say you need to research 10 competitor native ad campaigns and pull together a summary of their pricing, positioning, and key features. that's a defined job with a clear finish line. You don't need to iterate on it. send that to a sub-agent and keep your main chat free for the work that actually needs your hands on it.

But here's where it gets really interesting... you don't have to pick just one. You can use skills and sub-agents together in the same project, and that's when things really start to click.

Let's walk through a real example.. say you need to build out a full native ad funnel. you need competitor research done, you need ad copy written, you need the landing page designed, you need a follow-up email sequence for your lead capture form, and then you need it all put together and published.

that's not one task. That's five different tasks, and each one calls for a different tool.

first, you send a sub-agent to go research your competitors' native campaigns. It pulls together their pricing, messaging, positioning.... everything you need. that's a clearly defined job, no iteration needed. perfect for a sub-agent.

now you take what you learned and start writing your ad copy. this is where you switch to a skill. you're going to be going back and forth on headlines, reworking sections, refining the tone. You need the AI to remember every change you've made so it builds on your feedback instead of losing it.

Once the copy is dialed in, you use a skill again to design the actual landing page layout. You're making decisions about structure, moving sections around, tweaking how things look and feel. that's iterative work, so you want that context with you.

Then you shift to your email sequence for the lead capture. Another skill. you're writing multiple emails that need to work together, adjusting the flow between them, making sure the messaging stays consistent. iteration is the whole game here.

and finally, once everything is polished and ready to go, you hand it off to a sub-agent to push it all into your ad platform or page builder. or if you're building from scratch, the sub-agent can handle that too. It's an execution task at that point. You're not going back and forth on it. you just need it done.

See how that works? One project, five tasks, and you're using the right tool for each one instead of trying to force everything through the same approach.

and if you're thinking "I'm using something like OpenClaw where agents handle everything automatically"... this still applies. Those tools are making the same decisions about when to keep context together and when to separate it. the difference is they're making those decisions behind the scenes. if you understand the logic, you'll set up your automated workflows way better than someone who doesn't.

The simple way to remember it.. lots of iteration? Use a skill. clear execution? Use a sub-agent. big projects? use both.

once you start thinking about your work this way, you'll notice things moving faster with a lot less friction. cleaner chat windows. better context management. Less time repeating yourself because the AI lost track of what you already told it.
