Never thought I'd write one of these posts. Feels like everyone's just fishing for validation, but the path i took runs counter to most of the "standard" advice floating around, and maybe that's worth sharing.

Travel niche, underserved corner of it, mostly UK and Ireland viewers. Kept the channel private - personal call.

Post once a month. Full-time job makes that the ceiling right now. The "upload daily or die" crowd is loud, but the platform's shifted. You can absolutely build momentum on a monthly schedule if the packaging is tight. Consistency matters, but frequency isn't the only way to define it.

Passion isn't optional. This would be my dream gig full-time, and is just one piece of that puzzle. Don't call myself a "YouTuber" and don't plan to. When you actually care about the subject, the content gets better, viewers feel it, and - crucially - you stick around long enough for compounding to work. Burnout kills more channels than bad thumbnails.

nail the basics. Not "be a thumbnail god." Clear title that says what the video is, thumbnail that backs it up, description with real keywords, hook in the first few seconds so the hover preview actually converts. Skip the edgy stuff - swearing, violence bait, risky humor. big creators absorb that risk. Small channels get flagged or buried. Seen so many feedback requests where this is the whole problem.

Algorithm's interest-driven now, not creator-driven. subscribers barely move the needle. Yet most people still optimize for 2018 strategies. Opportunity's massive if you let the system understand who should watch.

differentiation is non-negotiable. Why your video over the hundred others surfacing next to it? "My personality" is a valid answer, but it's the hardest difficulty setting. people don't care who you are for a long time. Personality-first growth lives on TikTok and Reels.

Stay specific early. One thread running through everything so the algorithm - and viewers - can file you. Branch out after momentum. Impatience makes people pivot away from working niches because they're "bored." Goes back to passion: if you're bored, you picked the wrong topic.

Gut check: would you click your thumbnail? Would you watch the whole thing? Be honest. Saves months of spinning wheels.

Thirties, full-time job, limited hours. The perspective that comes with a decade-plus of career experience matters more than the time deficit. Skills compound. Don't spiral if growth feels slow or the niche isn't crystal yet. The real separator isn't talent or luck - it's whether you can show up consistently for years.
